Kellys Eye Post Chelsea
Written by Steve Kell
As well as a lesson on the pitch we should have learned the lesson off the pitch as well. Once again Wenger professes that the boys are now men and good enough to take that next step and once again we were found wanting by quite some distance as well.

So was the lesson from last years Champions League Semi Final against United and last years FA Cup Final against Chelsea learned? Nope not a cat in hells chance!

In fact yesterday really was men against boys in every aspect. There was hardly a 50/50 ball that we won in the entire match; it was the most passionless London derby I have had the misfortune to witness for many a year by any Arsenal side and to see our captain Cesc practically give up because all around him were not supporting him with 10 minutes to go was exasperating to see, our captain trying to do it all in midfield and no one else prepared to do the same in midfield or attack and in the end he just threw his arms in the air and yelled in frustration, where is Flamini when you need him, oh yeah he was surplus to Arsene's requirements.

We can blame the awful refereeing and justify to ourselves his shocking decisions that he got horribly wrong during the game, his poor decisions could have cost us a point if you were totally biased towards Arsenal, we could and should have had a goal to make the game 1 – 2 but in a way I am pleased that he didn’t allow the goal because it will haunt Arsene that his team once again was found to still have the same flaws and we were exposed yet again for the whole world to see that we have no underbelly to this side and Arsene still needs to address it.

We had Chelsea under pressure for the first 30 minutes or so but then Chelsea gradually worked us out and then they just stepped up their game-plan.

Eduardo and Arshavin should have been John Terry’s worst nightmare but it wasn’t because they did not get the right service. How on earth can Wenger leave the one thing on the bench that the Chelsea defence hate, pace?

By leaving Walcott and the passing through the eye of a needle of Rosicky sitting on the bench,  Arshavin and Eduardo didn’t get the service they should have but that was also coupled with Eduardo having his worst game in an Arsenal shirt to date. The starting line up should have included Rosicky, Eduardo, Walcott, and Arshavin, that would have been a more potent force that would have kept Cole restricted to playing left back instead of allowing him to make the amount of runs down the wing which eventually supplied the crosses for two of Chelsea’s goals.

Wenger was asked if our title hopes were now over with an 11 point deficit from Chelsea, he answered “no” and rightly so, however although like Arsene Wengers new football philosophy of small technical players instead of physical players that traditionally have been throughout Wengers teams Wengers answer to that question should have been the same answer because technically he is right, but in the brutal world of football reality our physical title hopes this year are over, out title aspirations in 2009 lasted one month more than it did last season. Yes we are improving but nowhere near enough to be a challenger for the title.

I have also included in the front page the email that went out to Arsenal fans today , this email seems to be Arsenals way of  getting the answer in first, maybe a case of damage limitation in case the fans get restless.

There are few positives to take from yesterday, firstly we have played nearly every team now and in fairness only Chelsea have deserved to beat us so second spot which is what I predicted at the beginning of the season is still on at the moment.

Wenger has three must win matches that will define our season, Liverpool and Villa in the league and West Ham away in the FA Cup, and they are all there for the taking if Arsenal are a team that believes in themselves when we face them, however our soft underbelly was already exposed for the third time this season at Upton Park when we let a 2 goal slip for a point but had we won and played our game in hand we could have been top of the league.

Not having the bottle to see off matches has happened to us on many occasions over the years with Wengers teams, remember Bolton away with a 2 goal lead and only drew to blow the title to Man United, Birmingham and Wigan away had we won would have had a 8 point lead and blew that as well, have you ever seen us ship so many goals and lose so many points when we had the lead? Don Howe, George Graham, Herbert Chapman, Bertie Mee, Terry Neil and alike will all be shaking their heads in disbelief at the one thing Arsenal have been known for throughout our history, having a mean defence and the ability to roll our sleeves up and tough it out.

Over to you Arsene, the transfer window is open soon and you need to remember that the Eduardo injury cost us the title once, are you going to let the van Persie injury cost us this season?
