Firstly I would like to say that I am the happiest person in town at the moment, Why you may ask, well let me tell you, usually when I speak about this person I feel I have to look over my shoulder to see who is around and whisper under my breath when I mention his name or this subject because it is like criticizing Her Majesty The Queen however I now feel as if I can finally come right out and just say it quite openly without any fear of retribution, words I thought I would never ever utter in my life. “Thank you John Motson”,
Why you may ask? Well let me tell you, John Motson is one of only a few people who have managed to spoil my football watching and listening pleasures on a constant basis for years and years. Motson is possibly the only person who can commentate on any football match that does not involve Manchester United and still talk more about Manchester United and their players more than the match he is commentating on.
The BBC will soon find out like they also did when Murray Walker retired, that just because they think one of their chaps is an institution in the media world, that this actually might not be the perception of that person outside the the confines of the beeb. When Murray Walker retired it was a breath of fresh air, i really was against ITV copverage of the Grand Prix however they are fantastic at it and quite clearly Murray Walker was holding back the coverage of the sport itself. The quality of the ITV Grand Prix coverage is second to none (other than those bloody badverts of course) and Sky are leading the way forward for football coverage so this is a real chance to get some forward thinking people to see where the BBC need to take its live commentry.
So why am I thanking him? Easy, John Motson has announced his retirement from International Football commentating. All we ask now it that you take it further and make it retirement from domestic football as well and take that odious prat Mark Lawrenson with you as the bloke is even more of a complete plonker who manages to be able to come out with so much drivel whilst you listen to a match it actually has you screaming at the TV telling them to shut the f*ck up.
Did you manage to watch any of the Euro’s? The football was pretty good but watching it on TV done my head in every time, all the match commentators for BBC and ITV kept doing was referring back to England or the Premier League analogies to everything. If they were talking about a pass from a midfield player to a striker they would keep going back to the similarities to players in the premier League like a Gerrard to a Torres pass, but then say that of course Gerrard’s pass would have done this bit better or whatever.
The anti German feelings by the BBC especially by Mark Lawrenson was terrible to hear and totally unprofessional, whether or not they had played the best football or not they did actually did reach the final and must be given some degree of credit when you also consider that they actually qualified to play in the Tournament and went on to become the 2nd best team in Europe.
Personally I did not want Germany to win but I watched it all unfurl and formed my own opinions and may the team that scores the most goals win the match and all that but to hear the verbal abuse the Germans got was all a totally shameful.
Commentators of course are supposed to give an opinion that is what they are paid for but to use the platform as the BBC commentators did was just truly unprofessional and was more of a points scoring basis with who could come out with the best wisecrack during the match. What we want is to be informed what has happened with the cold hard facts, what we want is to get the facts and not to hear an inaccurate opinion because of the pundits bias towards his own biased opinion, what we want is to hear facts and not a pundit try to persuade the audience that his opinion is still correct when quite clearly the TV slow motion replay actually tells a completely different story. What we want are facts and not what pundits had for breakfast, what we want are match facts and figures and an unbiased opinion and not a comedy show.
Did you know the BBC match commentators have a certain ability these days that no other match commentators have anywhere else in the world, they have the ability to be able to read all players minds and to tell whether a certain player even meant to do something or not, and have the ability to tell how painful a players injury is an even what they were thinking at the time, this is a truly remarkable. I make my own judgement when a player is taking a dive or is feigning injury and don’t need someone tell me, but I make my opinion myself with the evidence given not trying to slant it one way or another. Opinion based on fact is rule number 1.
The good thing that did come out of the match commentary was the difference between the match commentators and the experts in the studio, the experts and the commentators are two completely different entities and this has been the case since Martin O’Neil arrived, he adds sense and a really good informative opinion and gives you the reason why he has informed this opinion and has no problems correcting the ex players opinions as well including on the management side of things as well as they have no experience of this at all.
During one of the matches I was watching I really quite enjoyed however Motson and Lawrenson formed a very negative opinion of the first half of a match and then at the break we went back to the experts in the studio and they were all very positive about the match saying how this that and the other was interesting, How can two so called pundits get it so wrong? Football commentators are there to be shot at I know, it is the nature of the job, however this is one thing that really seals it for me, if you criticise a so called football commentator when they answer any question the first thing they will say no matter where they work, ie, Radio 5 live, Sky Sports, BBC, ITV, Setanta, TalkSport Radio or anything else, their first thing that ask is what football team do you support?
If they have to ask this question at all then it totally proves the point, when you reply they then say well what do you expect your a W, X or Y supporter your bound to have a biased opinion.
The problem is why do they feel the need to ask this question in the first place?
Easy, You know that if they ask this single question that they are biased themselves because by their own admission they concede that if you support a football club you must have a biased opinion, or more importantly it is hard to give an unbiased opinion which must also be true of themselves.
Please Motty, take Lawrenson with you and retire from football for the good of the game and let someone else, maybe someone who will be strong enough to stand up to bully tactics from managers, and not spend the next 5 years trying to curry favour after they ban your company from talking to them.
Motty and Lawrenson go for the sake of English and Premiership football and BBC please let us have someone to replace them who actually will stand up for the game itself, if the new commentator sees a player cheat, say so as long as it is an honest opinion and don’t worry if it is the England captain. Call the shots as they see them, without bias, without fear of treading on anyone’s toes, and without fear of retribution from any players, managers, coaches, or clubs, you need to be the bastion of truth and justice in our footballing world, especially after the complete joke we have been used to for the last umpteen years.
